2004 PNW Kiwanis Convention
The convention was held in Eugene, Oregon, at the Hilton Eugene and Conference Center. It was a nice layout, the only time we had to leave the building for meetings was for the Delegates assemblies. The Saturday morning assembly was after the awards breakfast. At about 9:30 AM we all walked several blocks to the McDonald Theater. After the "Red Coats" did their thing, we were to vote on the candidates for PNW governor elect for 2004-2005 and PNW governor for 2004-2005. Due to a snafu in handing out the ballots there was a half hour delay. We were also to vote on endorsing the candidacy of Sylvester Neal for Kiwanis International Trustee.
The first ballot, for Governor Elect, involved two candidates, Stephen Emhoff of Yakima, Wash. and Richard Haynes from Coos Bay and North Bend, Oregon. They were presented and Stephen Emhoff won this elected position. By unanimous consent, Richard Mayer of Greater Federal Way, Wash. will be our next PNW Governor. Due to the delay making us late for the Kiwanis Family Lunch scheduled for 12:00 noon back at the convention center, the next voting was rescheduled for Sunday morning. Sylvester is a very popular past PNW Governor from Anchorage, Alaska. He has been living in Auburn for several years, but still maintains his membership in one of the three Anchorage Kiwanis clubs. As was expected, he was endorsed at the Sunday vote. Now he will go to the 2005 Convention in Hawaii for the final vote. I believe he is the first candidate from the PNW District for International Trustee. Yeah! Sylvester!

The August Tidal Tales news of a car wash has not been verified. Maybe it's now being held in September. "Stayed tuned".
Three Key Clubbers volunteered to assist us at the taste of Edmonds on the second weekend in August. They showed up and their help is certainly appreciated. They will be awarded gift certificates for Edmonds Seniors to purchase one of Ruby's (in Alderwood Mall) ice cream creations.

President’s Corner As I prepare to hand the President's gavel to Clayne, I'm looking ahead to a productive year for our club, While reflecting upon the past year. One thought emerges. We have a club comprised of very dedicated, gifted, and interesting members. Each of you contributes generously. with time, talent and resources in your own fashion toward the club's success. Together we work to better our community, learn more about Edmonds and our neighboring communities through our enlightening programs, and we enjoy that we do it together. This past year we have come together with new ideas and projects and have attempted to streamline some of our practices. Our membership has seen a dip. Illness has had an impact. We have had to fill in when a member has problems in which he/she cannot fulfill his/her responsibilities. We have seen almost miraculous returns to health, too. We are each obliged now to give full support to Clayne and his officer team. Membership requires effort and action from all of us ...... with emphasis on action! And let's not forget .... Have fun doing it! In closing, I want to sincerely thank all of you for doing more in 2004! Now help our club to stay alive in 2005! Remember Let’s do more in ‘04! President Elwin

Proposed Addition to the Helmet Program While we were attending the table displaying some of our Bike Helmets during The night out to fight crime, we were asked by a parent why we didn't have a program to present to the kids that would encourage them to wear bike helmets. He said parents were aware of the need to wear helmets, but the kids tended to think it was sissy. We are looking into this idea. |

Still needing donations of yarn, washable yarn preferred, nylon, orlon, etc. Volunteer knitters would be more than welcome, too. Yarn is used for caps for newborn babes, shawls for chemo patients, and in some cases, afghans. Contact any Kiwanis Senior member.
