VISIT WITH DICK MAYER

2004-2005 GOVERNOR

PNW DISTRICT, KIWANIS

Dick Mayer, our new governor of the PNW District Kiwanis, visited us at our September 21st meeting. We were very pleased with his plans for his 2004-05 term of office. There will be less new club building, Our emphasis will be put on building up those existing clubs that are slowly losing membership. We have seen the Sno-King Club of Edmonds gradually lose it’s membership, and all the while we have been encouraged by International Kiwanis Reps. to start a new club in our vicinity.

There will be much less emphasis on accruing points for volunteer hours, too. The Kiwanis club’s purpose is to serve our local communities, with emphasis on children. Volunteers are just that, volunteers. We do what we can, when we are able. Our PNW District is to be a “Negative Free Zone”, meaning we are to focus on community service, not on personality issues. There will be less club reporting tasks. We need to work on being (and recruiting) Kiwanians and not Kiwanis members. Kiwanians attend meetings and work on projects and do not just join to have it on a resume. Read more about this focus on the inside pages.

           KeyClubNews

At the first Key Club meeting we learned there was a car wash in August at which they raised about $100.00 for their club. Meetings will be the 2nd and 4th Thursdays.  About 54 enthused students attended the first meeting on Sept. 23rd. Next meeting is Oct. 7th, at 7:15 AM  Five Meadowdale High School Key Club members who helped at Taste of Edmonds with the Kiwanis Sr.’s earned $50.00 for their Key Club and each will receive a Thankyou Certificate  from the Kiwanis Seniors Club for an ice-cream treat at  Ruby’s in the Alderwood  Mall.  They are Angela Sauthaid, Young Hoan, Thomas Dentry, Kiona Fukiyama, and Nadina Kahlil. The next meeting will have them starting to set objectives for the coming school year.

  President’s Corner

Fellow Kiwanians:

Iwould like to thank you all for having the confidence in me to lead this club for the coming year.  I am looking forward to a running start (or at least a power walk), so lets all dig in and make this a rewarding year of service, fun, and fellowship.

One of my goals is greater participation in interclubs and district events. Another is to increase our membership by 25%. I know this seems like a real stretch, but I am sure we can do it. My major goal, however, is the continuation of our service programs and the desire to see each one of us contributing volunteer time in service to the community. Lets be creative . . . . Seniors are in great demand as volunteers.

We will continue our new Program Committees which seem to be working well. If done properly, this has each of you responsible for 2 programs a year. Our outgoing Lt. Governor said our club has some of the most interesting programs in the district.

I look forward to working with the chairmen and members of all our successful committees. I hope each member can contribute in some way to our service projects and fundraisers.

Again, let me say that I look forward to seeing each of on Tuesday morning and hope that not only you will be there,  but you will bring a friend, too.

Looking toward a great year for the Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis club—your president,

              Clayne

Change in Interclub credits

Beginning October 1, Interclub credits will be changed as follows: 20 or lower members 2 make an Interclub; 21 to 30 members 3 make an Interclub; 31 or more members, 4 make an Interclub. At least 1 Interclub per week is encouraged. Phone the targeted Interclub first, they may have changed.

The Pacific Northwest District will have a new Logo for 2005. It represents growth, i.e. planting. The logo appears on the front page of this Tidal Tales. The Governor’s giveaway pin will be in the shape of a watering can. Bring in a new member and you will get a watering can pin.  Nurturing for growth will be an aim to plant as many trees, bushes or anything with roots as a symbol for growth. We are to water and nurture the plantings as we would nurture new members we bring in to help them grow.  The Senior Center yard would be a good place to start.

Absent but not forgotten

Gordy Wilson and Viola are in Everett now. He hopes to make it to a meeting soon. If you are planning a visit, Elwin has his address.

Former Kiwanian, George Montague, is at Avalon complex where our secretary lives. He is restricted from driving and uses the bus to get to the Senior Center. He would probably appreciate a lift sometime, to shop?

George Deardorff  pinch hits as our phone person, keeping in touch till he can return.

Bike Helmet Program

We are still pursuing the idea of having some kind of video or similar show that will encourage kids to wear their bike helmets. Parents know it is important, but too many kids adopt the idea that it's sissy, especially the boys.

SR’S INSTALL NEW OFFICERS

Next year’s officers have been duly installed and start their official duties as of Oct.1. Incoming Lt. Gov. Marybeth O’Leary officiated after outgoing Lt. Gov. Rod Vroman congratulated the outgoing and incoming crew.  Barlee’s restaurant was the scene; their staff fixed it up very nicely for us. Breakfast was served and the staff did an excellent job, taking orders, serving and keeping the coffee hot! If you want to know who the new officers are, they are already listed under 2005 officers, above!

The Division 22 Council Meeting, held at the Pavilion at Hill Park in Snohomish, was a lavish covered dish dinner to go with barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers furnished by the Tillicum Kiwanis. Following dinner was an awards and recognition presentation by outgoing Lt. Gov. Rod Vroman. Weather cooperated as we were treated to a lovely sunset with flocks of ducks & geese on the lake.

SECOND ANNUAL ART DAY 2004

This purpose is to bring together students from Edmonds for an entire day dedicated to art education. It will be held at the Edmonds Center for the arts. It is being held off site to ensure the the greatest level of participation from all students. It is Wednesday, November 3rd. The "Art Day" event will serve nearly 400 students and volunteers will be needed for all phases. Kiwanians can be a big help here! Harold Huston has information.
